Ensemble WRF forecasts run on Amazon Web Services

Running WRF "in the cloud"

The plots below were created by running my GEFS-WRF system in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Each of the WRF simulations, based on one of the 20 Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) member, is spawned to an independent AWS virtual machine instance. The 20 jobs run concurrently and write their data to the AWS S3 storage. When they are complete a computer at my facility pulls the data from the S3 storage and creates the ensemble forecast charts linked below.

From start to finish, all of the WRF simulations are executed and the graphics created in about one hour. By using the AWS Spot Instances, the cost is managed and the entire job, with 20 regional WRF simulations, is done for a cost of less than US$3.

Contact us if you would like further information on this capability or would like to see a demonstration.

WRF Ensemble forecasts (Hourly forecasts through 168 hrs)

The plots below are not currently run operationally, but are done on-demand when an interesting weather situation arises or as a demonstration of this capability. Carefully check the dates on the plots.
